On his way to Egygt, Bonaparte dreamt of remodelling Paris, making it a modern and comfortable city for all its inhabitants. Consul then emperor, he strongly imposed his mark on the capital. To facilitate circulation, he decided to construct new arteries like the Rue de Rivoli. He commissioned his favourite architects Charles Percier and Pierre Fontaine to construct the famous buildings with harmonious façades, and arcades protecting the street stalls below. Rivoli commemorated one of Napoleon's victories of his Italian campaign...
